● ● ● the spiritual senses and which I have found [to be] truth in demonstration.” The demonstration was all-important:
A science new to man is yet old to truth[.] Therefore while the discoverer or investigator of an eternal principle can see in the clear light of science truth unveiled and no longer a miracle or mystery—to those who see it not a demonstration is required so universal and unequivocal that none may deny.97
She was also working on another manuscript which was to be used more directly in teaching others how to heal, but a discussion of this is best deferred to the next period of her life. At this point it is sufficient to note that when she tried to lead Mother Webster to a higher method of healing than reliance on spirit controls the good dame became exceedingly resistant and grew progressively disenchanted with her guest.
Finally, Mrs. Glover decided that the time had come to advertise for students, and on July 4, 1868, the following advertisement appeared in the Banner of Light:
Any person desiring to learn how to heal the sick can receive of the undersigned instruction that will enable them to commence healing on a principle of science with a success far beyond any of the present modes, No medicine, electricity, physiology or hygiene required for unparalleled success in the most difficult cases. No pay is required unless this skill is obtained. Address, MRS. MARY B. GLOVER, Amesbury, Mass., Box 61.98
Once again the advertisement speaks of a scientific curative method rather than of a new religious teaching. But the Banner of Light was a spiritualist paper, a not too unlikely though not too promising place to advertise in those days if one were looking for people willing to think unconventionally, but hardly the place to announce a spiritual philosophy that coolly rejected spiritualism.
